Hall Place and Gardens

Hall Place and Gardens is a historic house and gardens located in Bexley, a suburb of London, England. The house dates back to the 16th century and has undergone numerous renovations and additions over the years. It is now owned by the London Borough of Bexley and is open to the public as a museum and event venue.

The original house was built in 1540 by Sir John Champneys, a wealthy merchant and member of the Worshipful Company of Grocers. It was a timber-framed mansion with a Great Hall, which was a common feature of Tudor houses. The house was purchased by Sir Robert Austen in 1649 and remained in the Austen family until the early 20th century. During this time, the house underwent several renovations and additions, including the construction of a brick façade in the 18th century and the addition of a conservatory in the 19th century.

In 1922, the house and its grounds were purchased by the London Borough of Bexley and opened to the public as a museum. Today, the house contains a collection of art and artifacts from the Austen family, as well as from the local area. It is a Grade II* listed building, which means that it is considered to be of significant historical and architectural importance.

The gardens at Hall Place are equally as impressive as the house. They are home to a variety of plants, flowers, and trees, including a formal rose garden and a herb garden. There is also a pond with a fountain, as well as several sculptures and statues. The gardens are a popular spot for picnics, as well as for events such as weddings and outdoor concerts.

One of the standout features of Hall Place and Gardens is the Bexley Heritage Trust Gallery, which is located in the stables of the house. The gallery displays a variety of exhibits and exhibits on the history of Bexley, as well as on the Austen family. It is a great place to learn more about the history of the area and the house.

In addition to the house and gardens, Hall Place and Gardens also has some other facilities for visitors to enjoy. There is a café on site, as well as a gift shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs and local produce. Several events and activities are held at the house and gardens throughout the year, such as guided tours, workshops, and outdoor theatre performances.

Hall Place and Gardens is a beautiful and historic destination that is well worth a visit. Whether you are interested in history, gardening, or just looking for a relaxing place to spend the day, there is something for everyone at Hall Place and Gardens.
